Here I am 67 years after witnessing one of the most historicly signifigant events in American History. I was a signalman in the Boat Group Commander’s LCP (landing cragt personel).We were patroling Red Beach at the base of Sirabachi,when a little after 10:a.m. some one said,”look theres a flag on the volcano it looks like it’s American”.I thought,those damn Japs are using an American Flag to lure marines up there to be ambushed,The flag went down shortly after that and I though “the marines are too smart to fall for that crap.
Then at about 1;30 another flag went up and it was bigger.I could see marines milling about and waving.Man what a sight,I was just stunned and amazed.It was very hard to believe they took that damned volcano!!!!!Sempre Fi!!!!!
